I do IT support for a living. The amount of abandonware I support or have to work around is crazy! Within the past few years (2022, I think) I had to call IBM for support for one of their products. It's not been sold. The data can't be easily converted or exported to another platform. IBM is STILL in business. There is NOTHING keeping them from supporting this product. The product? Lotus Notes The IBM rep? Laughed at me. (then tried some best effort support)
We ended up being able to move the mail functionality out to O365, (at significant cost, both for conversion and now continued subscriptions/upkeep btw) but the notes database, which the company still heavily relies on, is still in Lotus Notes. Because this file system and this company, predate the current Windows file/Active directory structure. Even if we got the contact info, files and data out, We'd have to completely rebuild all the permissions as well.
I'm not even going to go into banks using mainframe software. fts.
abandonware should be public domain. force companies to actively support and provide products if they don't wanna lose the rights to them

Randomly ranting about AI.
The thing that’s so fucking frustrating to me when it comes to chat ai bots and the amount of people that use those platforms for whatever godamn reason, whether it be to engage with the bots or make them, is that they’ll complain that reading/creating fanfic is cringe or they don’t like reader-inserts or roleplaying with others in fandom spaces. Yet the very bots they’re using are mimicking the same methods they complain about as a base to create spaces for people to interact with characters they like. Where do you think the bots learned to respond like that? Why do you think you have to “train” AI to tailor responses you’re more inclined to like? It’s actively ripping off of your creativity and ideas, even if you don’t write, you are taking control of the scenario you want to reenact, the same things writers do in general.
Some people literally take ideas that you find from fics online, word for word bar for bar, taking from individuals who have the capacity to think with their brains and imagination, and they’ll put it into the damn ai summary, and then put it on a separate platform for others so they can rummage through mediocre responses that lack human emotion and sensuality. Not only are the chat bots a problem, AI being in writing software and platforms too are another thing. AI shouldn’t be anywhere near the arts, because ultimately all it does is copy and mimic other people’s creations under the guise of creating content for consumption. There’s nothing appealing or original or interesting about what AI does, but with how quickly people are getting used to being forced to used AI because it’s being put into everything we use and do, people don’t care enough to do the labor of reading and researching on their own, it’s all through ChatGPT and that’s intentional.
I shouldn’t have to manually turn off AI learning software on my phone or laptop or any device I use, and they make it difficult to do so. I shouldn’t have to code my own damn things just to avoid using it. Like when you really sit down and think about how much AI is in our day to day life especially when you compare the different of the frequency of AI usage from 2 years ago to now, it’s actually ridiculous how we can’t escape it, and it’s only causing more problems.
People’s attention spans are deteriorating, their capacity to come up with original ideas and to be invested in storytelling is going down the drain along with their media literacy. It hurts more than anything cause we really didn’t have to go into this direction in society, but of course rich people are more inclined to make sure everybody on the planet are mindless robots and take whatever mechanical slop is fucking thrown at them while repressing everything that has to deal with creativity and passion and human expression.
The frequency of AI and the fact that it’s literally everywhere and you can’t escape it is a symptom of late stage capitalism and ties to the rise of fascism as the corporations/individuals who create, manage, and distribute these AI systems could care less about the harmful biases that are fed into these systems. They also don’t care about the fact that the data centers that hold this technology need so much water and energy to manage it it’s ruining our ecosystems and speeding up climate change that will have us experience climate disasters like with what’s happening in Los Angeles as it burns.
I pray for the downfall and complete shutdown of all ai chat bot apps and websites. It’s not worth it, and the fact that there’s so many people using it without realizing the damage it’s causing it’s so frustrating.
#I despise AI so damn much I can’t stand it#I try so hard to stay away from using it despite not being able to google something without the ai summary popping up#and now I’m trying to move all of my stuff out from Google cause I refuse to let some unknown ai software scrap my shit#AI is the antithesis to human creation and I wished more knew that#I can go on and on about how much I hate AI#fuck character ai fuck janitor ai fuck all of that bullshit#please support your writers and people in fandom spaces because we are being pushed out by automated systems

okay one thing that's fucked up with the 80-90 dollar switch 2 games is that. because there are no physical carts and they're just codes to verify a purchase online that means that come 10 years (the average lifespan of a nintendo system's online support) there's a pretty good chance that anyone getting a switch 2 for the first time just. won't be able to play anything on it unless they get one with an account already (if accounts even still work). because the servers will be down so they can't verify the codes they spent money on. and this will become less and less of a rare situation as time passes as this is, from what can be told now, the system that will slowly brick itself on purpose over a span of 10 years and demands 20-30 extra dollars compared to its competitors to do so
(i don't have an xbox or a ps5 to confirm if this will also be a problem for them but considering the massive fucking sizes of games these days it probably will be the case for that as well and i hate modern gaming a lot good god)
#text#switch 2#like the ds online support has been dead since 2014#but i can still play those two layton games i found at a retro games store a few years ago#official game carts as well as good as the day those games came out i just got them a lot later#because the whole ass games are on the carts it doesn't need a download or verification or anything#its just. heres the hardware that can run a ds game. theres the software for it on a neat little cart. stick it in. go#thats the POINT of a physical game is that you can be sure you can still play the thing if the system is discontinued#as well as be able to resell it to get your money back if you don't like it#that's another egregious point towards that high price tag. you can't even resell it#sure your n64 turok game that costed 80 dollars in 1999 was also egregious but you at least had the physical ass cartridge#and you can still resell it to get that money back nowadays#you won't be able to resell a digital game best you can do it try to get a refund but i doubt nintendo is half as good as steam is abt that#so just. fucked all around

love my fellow gifmakers so much but i do wish they'd stop spreading photoshop propaganda. you don't need photoshop to make nice hq gifs, all you need is ffmpeg, gifski, and literally any photo editing software of your choice so long as it allows batch editing. free yourselves from the adobe industrial complex
#foss >>>>> pirated paid software#piracy means you are a) taking a big risk installing it in the first place b) sacrificing tech support and updates & c) fucked if it breaks#FOSS means you get regular updates and support and your program is gonna be a lot more stable and reliable to use#open source is optional (just nice because it opens additional support avenues) but just using free software is the way to go imo#ive tried photopea it's not bad but it is very very slow if u have a lot of layers (unsurprisingly considering it runs in a browser lmao)#but imo? nothing beats gimp#you can use any of the million plugins out there and you can also add photoshop plugins#it can do anything that PS can do it just might use different buttons for it#and it is FOSS always <3#never gonna pay a subscription fee for gimp ever#bri babbles

My experience in impulse buying game development software has given me great knowledge
#my knowledge....#rpg maker is THE tool for a simple rpg#you can go pretty far with it#not too far but enough for a simple rpg#specially if you are a beginner#Game Maker is good for people who know a little code but not enough to go all out#but it wants your money soo bad#the one that fnaf was made in is also pretty easy#Unity has everything youve ever dreamed of doing but it's difficult. for pros only#All Lua based software is in the middle ground. very code heavy#The golden rule: if you see a software that doesnt have an active and supportive community RUN AWAY#LOOK AT ANOTHER ONE#a lot of these tend to be very limited and cause you trouble down the line#trust stuff thats known to be used. like ren'py. Godot. Pico8 even#that also means theres a lot of tutorials out there

got fed up and pulled the 'I'm a vet"-card on an impolite and obnoxious guy calling me "nurse" in a belittling way every other word today and the immediate change in attitude was frankly disheartening
why am I suddenly more deserving of respect than my coworkers just because I have a different job title
#he was in a hurry and wanted some slightly more complicated things than your standard feed/otc med sale#and he got increasingly agitated when it took a moment to get everything sorted out#and the accounting bit of it done#(which mind you i was never officially trained for)#(i just asked my boss how to do it because he's away quite often nowadays leaving me to run the show with my coworkers)#(and i didn't want him to be the only one able to handle returns and protocols and stuff)#(so i take extra care in doing these things because every mistake WILL mess up the software)#(to a degree that even the software's own IT support needs two days and a specialist to fix it)#(so. never again.)#and while i understand being low on time it's no excuse to behave like he did#and even worse. i told him i was already doing my best and that it takes some time and he wasn't exactly making me work faster like that#and the ONE thing he caught on was the vet thing#not the first time this happened either#i hate it honestly because respect should be given no matter someone's degree#(the automatic assumption that i can't be a vet based on my appearance is another can of worms)#(but it's partially my fault so that's alright)

👀👀 rlly interesting read on ovan, would love to hear some abt ur hcs on him n corbenik
(Now on DW!)
So it's been a hot minute since I watched Terminal Disc so my memory of the details of the canon are very vague, but I definitely think it's likely that the Epitaphs attached themselves to players in reverse numerical order, making Ovan the first and unintentionally the template for how becoming an Epitaph-PC would play out.
Corbenik is sort of funny as a Phase because the way it's laid out in the Epitaph, Corbenik serves no function until the Wave wipes out its intended target, and it's left behind to observe the void. As long as the system state isn't disturbed and no new AI begins to emerge, Corbenik stays passive theoretically forever -- but once it is disturbed, it rouses the rest of the Wave to come clean up what was left unfinished.
(I recognise this isn't how we see it play out in R1, I'm basing this on the idea that Morganna designed the Wave to be essentially self-propagating against Aura. The stalemate is the point, the rolling waves razing any fertile ground for her to develop on in favour of perpetual despair and the call of the void.)
With Corbenik as the rearguard of the apocalypse, it could have easily been the most active (least inactive?) of the Phases during the period of calm after Aura takes over Morganna's duties -- with no AI competing with Aura available to suppress, it was essentially on standby, latching onto Ovan the moment he showed up and then doing nothing until it registered the AIDA that also attached itself to Ovan.
Which is the thing that really fucks Ovan over, I think. The body timeshare he has with Tri-Edge is stressful enough, but Corbenik is also perpetually making him identify himself as the greatest threat to system integrity. So he's essentially getting a triple dose of the Epitaph "the solution is Fucking Kill Yourself" heightened self-destructive urge -- from the nature of the Cursed Wave, from the Vagrant AI-fication of the Phases and being (in part) his own natural-born enemy.
On top of this, Corbenik is perpetually calling to the other Phases like "over here! I've identified the enemy! Here is an AI we need to stop from reaching self-actualisation!" So candidates are drawn to him, unconsciously recognise him as having seniority, and then immediately identify him as the threat to be eliminated. People keep forming a kind of proxy disordered attachment to him, feeling compelled to follow his orders but also feeling threatened by his presence and become driven by the urge to destroy him.
Haseo is particularly vulnerable to this because Skeith and Corbenik are so intertwined in their roles, the first Phase is the one the last calls the strongest, and his personal sense of betrayal only amplifies the destructive resonance. And the influence goes both ways, the more Skeith perceives Corbenik's host as the main threat, the more Corbenik calls on Skeith as the vanguard to eliminate that threat. Haseo's (perceived) perception of him directly influences Ovan's perception of himself -- with everyone else Ovan is very particular about asserting his own reality, but with Haseo, the way Haseo sees him takes priority over how Ovan sees himself.
#van's answers#anonymous#dothack#.hack//g.u.#Ovan#Avatar Corbenik#GU spoilers#<- for my friends who are still playing the games#I have a lot of feelings about how the Cursed Wave is basically the software version of weaponised depression#And about how the games are overall very clear about how happiness and emotional connection aren't frivolous but rather essential to life#Corbenik as the 8th Phase is the pure distilled idea of 'there is a way out and it's by dying in your egg without ever hatching'#and it's supported by the other Phases in creating a vision of the world that has nothing worth living in it#as much as you're afraid of death -- look. See. What else is there?#They're out-of-proportion feelings of doom aimed to keep a consciousness that vastly exceeds human comprehension from having any hope#AND CC CORP JUST FUCKING SLAPPED THEM INSIDE SOME PCS AND GAVE THEM TO PLAYERS LIKE 'here you go! Here's your Personal Cataclysm Gun!'#The real enemy in dothack is closed source software development and corporate vanity

Tbh I feel the biggest takeaway from the hbomb vid isn't exactly "get their ass" about these specific people and more the "you are not immune to uncritically accepting the media you consume"
Like he literally gives you a bunch of keys over and over and over again to seeing through the lies and fact checking people you enjoy/idolise and I feel I'm seeing a lot less of that takeaway then just purely the mentality of ganging up on specific people you can morally dislike now bc they did a bad thing.
#idk if this makes sense its late but i just feel like this was a big educational vid to me saying#hey kids!!! when you engage in media farm areas be aware about critically sorting though the theives with flashy editing software#and the liars trying to sway your sympathies (and virtrol) to find people who are actually making original content and support them!#like we will never stop the liars and the cheaters we HAVE to put it on ourselves to fliter it out theres no other way#the “let someone else think for me” mentality kills me a lil i think#also im open to discussing this idk if this makes sense or not its just been bugging me#very bad with words and writing down my thoughts which is why i dont talk like this often

25 ways to be a little more punk in 2025
Cut fast fashion - buy used, learn to mend and/or make your own clothes, buy fewer clothes less often so you can save up for ethically made quality
Cancel subscriptions - relearn how to pirate media, spend $10/month buying a digital album from a small artist instead of on Spotify, stream on free services since the paid ones make you watch ads anyway
Green your community - there's lots of ways to do this, like seedbombing or joining a community garden or organizing neighborhood trash pickups
Be kind - stop to give directions, check on stopped cars, smile at kids, let people cut you in line, offer to get stuff off the high shelf, hold the door, ask people if they're okay
Intervene - learn bystander intervention techniques and be prepared to use them, even if it feels awkward
Get closer to your food - grow it yourself, can and preserve it, buy from a farmstand, learn where it's from, go fishing, make it from scratch, learn a new ingredient
Use opensource software - try LibreOffice, try Reaper, learn Linux, use a free Photoshop clone. The next time an app tries to force you to pay, look to see if there's an opensource alternative
Make less trash - start a compost, be mindful of packaging, find another use for that plastic, make it a challenge for yourself!
Get involved in local politics - show up at meetings for city council, the zoning commission, the park district, school boards; fight the NIMBYs that always show up and force them to focus on the things impacting the most vulnerable folks in your community
DIY > fashion - shake off the obsession with pristine presentation that you've been taught! Cut your own hair, use homemade cosmetics, exchange mani/pedis with friends, make your own jewelry, duct tape those broken headphones!
Ditch Google - Chromium browsers (which is almost all of them) are now bloated spyware, and Google search sucks now, so why not finally make the jump to Firefox and another search like DuckDuckGo? Or put the Wikipedia app on your phone and look things up there?
Forage - learn about local edible plants and how to safely and sustainably harvest them or go find fruit trees and such accessible to the public.
Volunteer - every week tutoring at the library or once a month at the humane society or twice a year serving food at the soup kitchen, you can find something that matches your availability
Help your neighbors - which means you have to meet them first and find out how you can help (including your unhoused neighbors), like elderly or disabled folks that might need help with yardwork or who that escape artist dog belongs to or whether the police have been hassling people sleeping rough
Fix stuff - the next time something breaks (a small appliance, an electronic, a piece of furniture, etc.), see if you can figure out what's wrong with it, if there are tutorials on fixing it, or if you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer instead of trashing the whole thing
Mix up your transit - find out what's walkable, try biking instead of driving, try public transit and complain to the city if it sucks, take a train instead of a plane, start a carpool at work
Engage in the arts - go see a local play, check out an art gallery or a small museum, buy art from the farmer's market
Go to the library - to check out a book or a movie or a CD, to use the computers or the printer, to find out if they have other weird rentals like a seed library or luggage, to use meeting space, to file your taxes, to take a class, to ask question
Listen local - see what's happening at local music venues or other events where local musicians will be performing, stop for buskers, find a favorite artist, and support them
Buy local - it's less convenient than online shopping or going to a big box store that sells everything, but try buying what you can from small local shops in your area
Become unmarketable - there are a lot of ways you can disrupt your online marketing surveillance, including buying less, using decoy emails, deleting or removing permissions from apps that spy on you, checking your privacy settings, not clicking advertising links, and...
Use cash - go to the bank and take out cash instead of using your credit card or e-payment for everything! It's better on small businesses and it's untraceable
Give what you can - as capitalism churns on, normal shmucks have less and less, so think about what you can give (time, money, skills, space, stuff) and how it will make the most impact
Talk about wages - with your coworkers, with your friends, while unionizing! Stop thinking about wages as a measure of your worth and talk about whether or not the bosses are paying fairly for the labor they receive
Think about wealthflow - there are a thousand little mechanisms that corporations and billionaires use to capture wealth from the lower class: fees for transactions, interest, vendor platforms, subscriptions, and more. Start thinking about where your money goes, how and where it's getting captured and removed from our class, and where you have the ability to cut off the flow and pass cash directly to your fellow working class people

My favorite example is that one where where iRobot's support team would offer to replace people's broken Roombas, and they'd be horrified at the idea of replacing their little pet who cleans their house. They'd request that the company fix their same Roomba and send it back instead, because she is named Rosie and she sleeps at the foot of their bed.

#my new wfh job sent me a brand new macbook#one day the security software was not updating no matter what we did#which is like pretty vital#and the tech support lady was like#hmm if we can't fix this we might have to replace your whole computer#and I just looked at my two-month-old computer like#nooooo#it hasn't done anything wrong#it isn't fair#and I told her the story about the Roombas#anyway they did manage to fix the security thingy so my computer lives on
